After the Amazon Rainforest, the cerrado biome is the second-largest in Brazil, comprising an expansive tropical savanna. The area was regarded as unfit for agriculture until the 1960's due to acidic soil with low nutrient content, but vast quantities of lime have been spread on Brazilian fields to raise the pH and the area is now a major exporter of quality agricultural products, including coffee.
